Bet on Preakness Stakes

Home of the prestigious $1 million Preakness Stakes, the race that determines whether the Kentucky Derby winner will have a chance to grab the Triple Crown. Preakness Stakes has a rich history, it was first run two years before the Derby, in 1873, and was named after the horse who won the 1870 Dinner Party Stakes, Preakness.

Pimlico Race Course - May 21st, 2011

Pimlico officially opened in the fall of 1870, with the colt Preakness winning the first running of the Dinner Party Stakes. Three years later the horse would have the 1873 Preakness Stakes named in his honor. The track is also noted as the home for the match race in which Seabiscuit beat War Admiral in the second Pimlico Special, on November 1, 1938, before a crowd of 43,000. It is currently owned by Magna Entertainment Corp.

The Preakness has had some memorable horse race winners with great photo finishes. Who could ever forget horses like Northern Dancer, Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, Tabasco Cat, or Smarty Jones.

2011 Preakness Stakes Winner

The 2011 Preakness Stakes winner at Pimlico in Maryland is Shackleford. After Animal Kingdom's stunning victory at the Kentucky Derby, the once-underdog entered the Preakness as the favorite to win, but fell just short of victory and finished three quarters of a length behind Shackleford at the finish.

What was interesting about Shackleford is that the Preakness' crew had a tough time getting him into his post position. He kept fighting the gate workers and yet, he came out of the gates screaming and he didn't wavier too much on his way to victory.
