It's the All Star Game of Thoroughbred racing - only better. Eight times better. It's the Breeders' Cup Championship, a multi-million dollar extravaganza that brings together the world's best horses to compete in eight sensational races.
The Breeder's Cup was first run in 1984 and was founded by John R. Gaines as a year-end championship event. The Breeder's Cup is made up of eleven separate races. Each race includes 14 running horses. The first seven of each race are automatically selected based on their performance in that year's graded stakes races. The other seven entrants are chosen by a special panel of directors. The final two and perhaps the most well known races at the Breeder's Cup are the "Turf" and "Classic" events.
The Breeders Cup is run at a different race track each year in order to give the US public the opportunity to see the great day every couple of years as it heads from east coast to west coast from year to year. What makes this day so special is that each Breeders Cup Betting race is worth at least $1 million in Prize money and for the eleven races it is in the region of $17 million, the two days attracts the best horses in search of these riches from all over the World and the US love to see horses from the UK, Ireland and France taking their chance but we are now seeing entrants from South Africa and all over the World. Many great US equine stars have emerged over the years including Azeri, A.P. Indy, Alysheba, Cigar, Personal Ensign, Ferdinand, Sunday Silence and a European star that will go down in history is Ouija Board who won her second title in three years in the Filly and Mare Turf at Churchhill Downs in 2006.
